How do Self-Driving Cars Work?

Self-driving cars are here and while some look at these cars as still something scary and out of the future, the truth is they’re on the roads near you, with an expected 12 million driverless cars expected to hit the roads by 2020. Google was the first to make the driverless car. In 2011, BMW used a robotic car in Munich, Germany, driving the vehicle to Nuremberg, a distance of about 170 km. Mercedes Benz has even released their own version of the driverless cars. So, it is clear to see that driverless cars are here and they are worth talking about.

The self-driving car uses many driving aids available to human drivers today. Lane-keeping systems is one such technology, allowing the vehicle to follow road markings with a sound and steering wheel correction if the vehicle drifts out of lane. Other technologies include auto parking systems, satellite navigation systems, and emergency braking, among others. Some driverless cars also feature computerized steering, braking and acceleration. In order for the vehicle to drive itself, these systems must be combined together, using a special software, and programmed with sensors that tell the software what is happening and what to do next.

And so, the driverless cars of today have an abundance of sensors on them that help detect the edges of the roads, read signs and traffic lights, and more. In addition to sensors, self-driving cars also have lidar, radar, and cameras, with ultrasonic detectors that provide detailed mapping of the area.

Technology is here and it is making its presence known in a big way. Self driving cars re really here and no longer something of the future.
